LoveLaois Podcast: Time to Shine, poster saga, housing issue and remembering Will Sherlock and Jim McDonald

On this week’s LoveLaois Podcast we’re joined by Martin Crowley, one of the driving forces behind the Shine 2023 event which takes place in Emo Court this Saturday, May 27.

Shine is a joint venture between Emo GAA club and the Laois Chamber of Commerce and combines a trade fair featuring over 100 exhibitors alongside Ireland’s Fittest Team competition, a gruelling sporting challenge that is centre stage of the event all day on Saturday.

Steven and Alan chat about the event, as well as about some of the other local stories of the past week.

Alan discusses the story whereby up to 16% of Laois County Council houses are refused by applicants.

In Pictures: Late Late Show host pays a visit to popular Laois restaurant

Ryan Tubridy made a surprise appearance in Laois today as he popped in to a popular local restaurant.

Stradbally Fayre welcomed the RTE TV and radio presenter into their establishment this afternoon.

Tubridy arrived unannounced and ordered the toasted special with chips – with owner Chris Maguire telling LaoisToday that the Dubliner was pleasantly surprised with the size of the portion.

“I don’t think he was quite ready for the size of the portions that us culchies have down here,” Chris joked.

He said: “Ryan called in unannounced and enjoyed a meal with us this afternoon.

“After he had finished, we approached him to see would he be willing to take some photos with staff and customers and he could not have been more obliging.

“One of our customers, Mairead, spotted him first and Ryan was very kind with his time.

“We had no prior notice or anything, he just called in so it was a great surprise for us all.

“Being located here in Stradbally, we are used to celebrities dropping in whether they are attending the ploughing or Electric Picnic.

“And every single of them, just like Ryan, have been so kind and pleasant.”

Tubridy is coming to the end of his spell as Late Late Show host and Chris said everyone in Stradbally Fayre wished him well.

He said: “We thanked Ryan for all of the years of entertainment that he gave us all and wished him well for the future.”

‘Energy companies must cut their consumer prices to reflect cheaper wholesale electricity’

Energy companies must pass on savings to their customers after wholesale electricity prices were dramatically reduced in the last year.

So says Deputy Charlie Flanagan as the latest figures from the CSO show wholesale electricity prices decreased by over 40% in the 12 months to April 2023, and by 13.5% when April and March 2023 are compared.

Speaking today Deputy Flanagan said: “This is a substantial saving and must be passed on to customers.

“Energy companies were quick to increase prices when their own costs increased, but we are not seeing the same urgency in passing on savings to customers as energy prices come down.

“As we can see from today’s figures, wholesale prices have been dropping for a while – yet nothing has been done to date by those companies making the profits.

“As we move into the warmer months, customers are starting to see smaller bills thanks to less usage, but that shouldn’t be a smokescreen for energy companies to hide behind with continued overcharging.”

Deputy Flanagan continued: “The Government has taken several steps to help ease the burden of spiralling electricity prices on hard-pressed households.

“Energy credits of €600 have been made available to every household to help them with their electricity bills and we have reduced VAT on electricity and gas to 9% – their lowest rate ever.

“We’ve taken a special dividend from ESB that we can use to help homes and businesses over the time ahead.

“Yesterday, Cabinet approved the extension of the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme for small businesses until the end of July.

“And a windfall tax is being imposed on the profits of the energy companies. We published legislation in March, which we referred to the relevant Oireachtas joint committee and I hope we will pass it before the summer recess.”

Concluding Deputy Flanagan said: “We will say to these companies, in a very practical way, that if they are going to continue to profiteer on the back of Irish people, then we are going to tax them for it.

“Wholesale savings must be passed on to customers without delay.”

New HSE chief set to visit Abbeyleix Hospital as 12 beds remained unopened due to delays

The new HSE chief, Bernard Gloster, is set to visit Abbeyleix Hospital ‘in the near future’.

So says Sinn Fein TD Brian Stanley who requested Mr Gloster’s presence at the facility.

12 beds at the hospital remain unopened due to delays in remedial works at the location.

The Laois TD says that this is putting pressure on Portlaoise Hospital as these beds could be used as a ‘step down’ facility for when patients are discharges from Portlaoise.

Deputy Stanley said: “I have engaged with the new CEO of the HSE since his appointment to the position in recent weeks.

“Two weeks ago, Mr Gloster and his senior management team were before the Public Accounts Committee. I raised the matter of Abbeyleix with him and the importance of having the full capacity of the Hospital utilised.

“I used the occasion to highlight to him the need for the second side of the Hospital (side A) to be re-opened for use as a step-down facility for patients being discharged from Portlaoise Hospital.

“There is an urgent need for these beds to free up desperately needed space in Portlaoise.

“The fact that twelve beds remain unopened is a scandal. This has been delayed due to the need of some remedial works and fit out.”

Deputy Stanley says that the latest up to date position on the step-down beds is that the remedial works are to be completed in July.

He said: “I am also informed that ‘the appointment of the Community Consultant Geriatrician along with nursing support staff is being actively progressed at present’.

“Since his appearance at the Public Accounts Committee, I have discussed with Bernard Gloster the potential for the Abbeyleix Hospital site to be utilised as a community care hub.

“While the reopening of the Day-Care centre within the Hospital is positive, what is really needed is a new day-care building on site that would also accommodate additional primary care services.

“The site in Abbeyleix has enormous potential due to it being over four acres in size and meet with staff given its prime location adjacent to the centre of Abbeyleix town.

“I have impressed on Bernard Gloster that he should visit the site and he has informed me in the last few days that he intends to do so in the near future.”

With his appointment of the new CEO for the HSE and the fact that he is taking an active interest in Abbeyleix, I am hopeful of further progress being made.”

Rathdowney-Errill GAA announce the date for their annual fundraising golf classic

Rathdowney-Errill GAA are holding their Annual Golf Classic, in the always resplendent Rathdowney Golf Club on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10.

The event is open to teams of 4 (any combination of ladies and men) at an entry fee of €120.

Juvenile and U-20 teams are also welcome at a cost of €60.

It will be the seventh annual running of the classic, which has become firm favourite in the sporting calendar.

Last year’s classic welcomed over 180 golfers, including former and current players, and many golfing enthusiasts who came out to help support the club.

The Camross-Ballacolla quartet of Fint Scully, Richie Moloney, Gerry Kavanagh and Tom Moore showed that they were just as adept with the golf clubs as they were were with a hurl, coming out on top last year with a marvellous return of 93 points.

They just edged out Sean Bolger, Billy Harte, Paud O’Reilly and Malachy Fogarty, after a countback.

Mark Aylward took home the longest drive, while the former Waterford and Limerick legend, Martin Geary, created a piece of golfing history when he scored a hole in one on the 17th – the first in the history of the classic.

The course is always kept in great condition by Lorcan Dunne and the greenkeeping staff, which certainly adds to the occasion.

Regardless of one’s golfing ability, the annual classic offers a great day out for all who take part.

‘Government must accept its part in increasing women’s exposure to violence’ – Carol Nolan

TD for Laois Offaly, Carol Nolan has launched a stinging criticism of what she says is ‘government failure to provide sufficient domestic violence spaces for women’ in her constituency.

The Independent TD was speaking during a series of Dáil statements on the recent CSO Survey on Sexual Violence.

Deputy Nolan pointed to the Survey’s findings that the majority of adults (78%) who experienced sexual violence at least once in their lifetime knew the perpetrator, with very little difference between women (79%) and men (75%).

“My intention is to place this frightening statistic firmly in the context of domestic violence and the historical lack of such services in my own constituency,” said Deputy Nolan

“If we categorise violence as physical, sexual and emotional harm against women then I believe that the failure of this and previous Governments to provide women’s refuge spaces now means that those very same Governments must accept a direct proportion of the blame for the experiences that women and indeed their children could have avoided if such services were in place.

“The lack of a women’s domestic violence refuge in Offaly for at least 25 years has without any doubt contributed to the levels of violence that women and children in my county could have avoided if sufficient beds and safe spaces were available.

“How could it be otherwise when these women had nowhere else to go?

“I accept that there has been some additional investment in domestic violence services and indeed I welcome that.

“But it is also high time for Government to accept that the delays which they presided over in terms of funding refuges has played an indirect but no less real role in violence against women,” Deputy Nolan concluded.

Portarlington Credit Union proud to support new book rental scheme for Coláiste Íosagáin

Portarlington Credit Union were delighted and very proud to welcome Coláiste Íosagáin to the office this morning (Tuesday, May 23) for a cheque presentation for their Book Rental Scheme that is being introduced in the school in September 2023, for their incoming first year students.

Portarlington Credit Union are donating €20,000 towards the setting up of this wonderful new Book Rental Scheme.

This scheme will benefit the youth, the education of our youth and it will support families with the cost of sending their child or children to school.

We are aware of the rising cost-of-living expenses and we are thrilled to be able to help develop this scheme in order to ease the burden on parents and continue to support our local community.

Coláiste Íosagáin is the sole provider of post primary education in Portarlington with an enrolment close to 1100 students so this initiative will be a massive difference to the community.

Range of activities and great celebrations planned as date for Laois Africa Day 2023 confirmed

Laois County Council and the Laois African Support Group have announced Saturday, June 3, as the date for Africa Day 2023.

Africa Day is an initiative of the African Union, which celebrates African diversity and success and the cultural and economic potential of the continent.

Laois County Council together with Laois African Support Group is among a number of organisations around the country that have been supported by Irish Aid, the Government’s overseas aid programme, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs
to host Africa Day events this year.

The Africa Day Laois event is taking place on the grounds of Portlaoise Leisure Centre, Portlaoise.

“Portlaoise will be uplifted and transformed by the sights, sounds and smells of Africa, as we gather to celebrate Africa Day Laois,
2023,” the organisers said.

“Africa’s rich culture will be showcased through family-friendly activities, along with music, craft, performances, and educational elements.

“You will be entertained by live music, drama , poetry, along with many more performances.

“There will also be traditional African drumming and dance displays, African fashion, arts and crafts and much more.”

In the interest of sustainability and to help in reducing omissions and traffic congestion, attendees are encouraged to use public transport, to walk or to cycle to your local Africa Day.

Organisers have also recommend that attendees bring a refillable water container to avoid the use of single use plastic.

There will also be a Laois Africa v Laois Gardai soccer match on the astroturf pitch at 11.30am that morning as part of the celebrations.

“Last year’s event took place in glorious sunshine and was truly a great celebration of African culture. We hope to see you again on Saturday, the 3rd of June. You are invited to embrace African culture by wearing bright colours,” the organisers said.

Shine 2023 to go centre stage in Emo this Saturday – a brilliant free family event

This weekend will see the return of Shine 2023 to the beautiful surrounds of Emo Court Estate and Gardens.

After the super success of Shine 2022 that saw teams compete, spectators entertained and local businesses showcase all they had to offer, Emo is looking like the place to be this Saturday.

The all-day event, starting from 9am will see teams compete from all over Ireland seeking to be crowned “Ireland’s Fittest Team”.

Surrounding the centre stage, there will be numerous stalls to browse with quality, local offerings and plenty entertainment for all the family.

The Main Event

Shine will be one of the greatest athletic events in Ireland this summer. 32 teams from all across Ireland will come to Emo, Co. Laois and compete in a series of obstacle courses and head to head events.

Teams from different sporting backgrounds including GAA, basketball, soccer, athletics, and swimming and also from schools, colleges and businesses will battle it out in front of 5,000 spectators. Only one team can earn the crown of Ireland’s Fittest Team.

The team will be made up of six athletes. Each event requires four athletes to participate, with a minimum of one female member in each event. Subs will be used as per rules for use of Subs.

Support your team through each phase throughout the day as teams battle though the qualifiers and semi-finals in the hope of making it to the Grand Final on Saturday afternoon.

Trade Show in Association with Laois Chamber Alliance

Shine 2023 will also showcase some of the best of what Laois has to offer.

We are partnering with Laois Chamber of Commerce and other local organisations to bring a great array of products and services that’s on offer in Laois.

With up to 5,000 visitors expected on the day, this is a great opportunity for Laois business to have direct contact with their customers who in turn can taste, feel, understand and purchase the wonderful products and services that Laois companies produce.

Emo Court Estate will provide the setting for our trade show and with free entry on the day, this promises to be a fun, enjoyable family day out.

The Venue

Emo Court is a quintessential neo-classical mansion. This magnificent Estate and its Gardens is a popular tourist attraction all year round and is under the care of the OPW.

The gardens are a model of neo-classical landscape design, with formal lawns, a lake and woodland walks just waiting to be explored.

On the day, the events will take place across the lawns with spectacular views throughout. There will be plenty of parking and lots to do and see for the spectators.

Getting There

Shine 2023 is just 2.5km from Emo. (Accessed from Kildare – Portlaoise Road – N7, Just off the M7 Motorway).

Portarlington train station is 7km from Shine.

There will be ample free parking on the day.

Extreme sadness at the death of the hugely popular Will Sherlock

There is a huge sadness around Laois today with the news of the death of Will Sherlock, a young man aged only in his mid 40s.

From Eyne outside Portlaoise, Will had been battling illness for the past couple of years.

A giant of a man and universally popular, Will worked as a prison officer in Portlaoise.

He was synonymous with Portlaoise Rugby Club, with whom he played for more than 30 years. He was a former captain of the club and a Towns Cup winner in 2003.

He first joined the club as a young boy and went to play at all levels up until he got sick in recent years.

He was a hugely respected figure across all sections of the club and as well as playing, he regularly put his shoulder to the wheel in club activities off the pitch.

Will is survived by his wife Helen (nee Mulhare) and young children Ella, Billy, and Leah.

Predeceased by his dad Mick, Will is also mourned by mother Ann, brothers John, Patrick, Michael and Mark and sister Roseann.

He will be sadly missed by his aunt Bridie, sister-in-laws Louise, Miriam, Roisin and Una, brothers-in-law Gearóid, Des and Seamus, father and mother in law, Michael and Teresa, nieces and nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends including those in Portlaoise Rugby Club and The Irish Prison Service.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later. May Will Rest in Peace.

Laois-Offaly ‘profoundly under-resourced’ as just one Garda assigned to the Divisional Drug Unit

The Laois/Offaly Divisional Drug Unit of An Garda Síochána has the lowest number of Garda members assigned to it when compared to every other county and garda division across the state.

This is according to Independent TD for Laois-Offaly, Carol Nolan.

Deputy Nolan confirmed that the data revealed there was just one Garda member assigned to the Laois/Offaly Divisional Drug Unit:

She said: “At the outset I want to commend the dedication and commitment of all Garda members right across Laois and Offaly who are operating in increasingly difficult circumstances.

“However, this data makes it absolutely clear that the constituency is profoundly under-resourced when it comes to staff members being assigned to the Divisional Drugs Unit.

“Why is it that Laois/Offaly is the only Divisional Drug Unit in the entire country with just one Garda assigned to this role?

“Apart from Wexford we are also the only counties without any member at the rank of Sergeant attached to the Drugs Unit. This is entirely unacceptable.

“There are 332 members assigned to the various Divisional Drugs Unit’s and yet here we are with just one member assigned.

“I want answers on this and I mean to get them as a matter of urgency.

“Offaly and Laois no more than most other counties are struggling to respond to the social and criminal harm caused by the sale and consumption of illegal drugs.

“We deserve to be properly resourced in the fight against drugs.”

Portlaoise Dog Walk to be held in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

An event in support of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will take place this Sunday in Portlaoise.

The Portlaoise Dog Walk will begin at Togher Woods car park on Sunday, May 28 at 11am.

The walk will be 3km and will last about 45 minutes.

Participants are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends and wear an item of green clothing.

There is no registration fee, simply join on the day.

Guide Dogs act not only as a mobility aid but also as a constant support providing both safety and social benefits.

The association also provide Assistance dogs. These are trained to work with a child with autism and their family. The primary function of an assistance dog is safety.

Assistance dogs are like moving anchors and security blankets for children with Autism. Each Assistance Dog wears a special blue jacket, which has a small handle attached.

There is a belt attached to the child’s waist and short lead attaching the child to the dog.

The parent, using an extended lead from behind or the side, then controls both the child and the dog. The dog responds to the verbal cues from the parent who controls speed and direction.

Gardai renew appeal for information into ‘fatal incident’ which led to death of Laois teenager

Gardaí in Portlaoise are renewing their appeal to the public for information in relation to a fatal incident that led to the tragic death of a Laois teenager.

David Brown sadly died in a wooded area near Ballyshaneduff, Ballybrittas, on Sunday, April 9.

Gardai are once again appealing for anyone with information about this incident to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “At approximately 1.30pm, a quad bike with two males on board collided with a tree.

“A male teenage youth was removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, where he passed away.

“A second male teenage youth was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore following the incident and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

“Investigations are ongoing. Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to contact them.

“Any person who was in the Ballyshaneduff area on Sunday, 9th April 2023, between 1.00pm and 2.00pm, and who may have observed a quad bike travelling in the area, is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.

“Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash cam, are asked to make this available to Gardaí.

“Any person with information in relation to this incident can contact Gardaí in Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Laois Councillor calls for more emergency information on Slieve Bloom Cycle Way

A Laois Councillor has called for more emergency information to be displayed at the Slieve Bloom Cycle Way.

Cllr James Kelly was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District meeting where he called on Laois County Council to provide on-site information along the trail to alert cyclists that in the event of an accident or emergency, they may be out of mobile phone coverage.

The Independent Cllr said the cycle track has been very successful at attracting visitors, but users need to be made more aware of the potential hazards and dangers.

Mr Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer of Roads said the Council will work with Coilte to advise trail users of this message.

Cllr Kelly also called on the County Council to implement a litter bin replacement programme throughout the Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick Municipal Area for damaged and not fit for purpose bins.

He described the current bins in the area as “about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.”

He said that the old-style bins still have ashtrays on top of them, which is causing bin fires.

Cllrs John King and Ollie Clooney also put their weight behind the motion.

Mr Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “Litter bins are only replaced when the condition of the existing bins necessitates replacement.

“Laois County Council are actively monitoring the condition of the bins to ensure renewals are completed on a timely basis.”

Cllr Kelly also called on the Council to, as a mater of urgency, carry out road safety works on the narrow road at Derrycarrow, Camross.

Mr Kenny responded, saying: “Council staff will arrange to meet with Cllr Kelly at the site to assess the need for safety improvement works.”
